How Far Can an Electric Bike Go? E-Bike Range Explained

One of the first questions people ask when buying an electric bike is simple: how far can an electric bike actually go on one charge?


Unfortunately, there isn't one answer.


Depending on the bike, battery, terrain and how you ride, the range of an electric bike can vary considerably. Manufacturer range figures are useful for comparing bikes, but your real-world range won't always match the maximum number advertised.


In this guide, we'll explain what affects electric bike range, how battery size comes into it and what you can do to get more miles from every charge.


What Is the Average Range of an Electric Bike?

Many modern electric bikes are capable of covering several dozen miles from a single charge, while bikes equipped with larger-capacity batteries can potentially travel considerably further.


However, two riders using exactly the same electric bike could achieve very different ranges.


That's because an e-bike doesn't simply use a fixed amount of electricity for every mile travelled.


Your range depends on how much assistance the motor needs to provide.


A relatively light rider cycling along flat roads using a low assistance setting will generally travel further than a heavier rider tackling steep hills using maximum assistance.


This is why advertised range figures should normally be treated as a guide rather than a guarantee.


What Determines an E-Bike's Range?

Several factors can have a surprisingly large effect on how far you can travel.


1. Battery Capacity

Battery capacity is one of the biggest factors.

Electric bike batteries are commonly described using watt-hours (Wh) or using their voltage and amp-hour (Ah) rating.

For example:

36V × 10Ah = 360Wh

36V × 15Ah = 540Wh

Everything else being equal, the 540Wh battery stores more energy and should therefore provide a greater potential range.

This is particularly worth considering if you're buying an electric bike for longer commutes, leisure rides or regular journeys where charging isn't convenient.


2. The Assistance Level You Use

Most electric bikes allow you to choose between several levels of motor assistance.

Higher assistance makes riding easier, but it also requires more energy from the battery.

If you spend an entire journey using the highest assistance setting, you'll usually get considerably less range than someone using Eco or a lower assistance mode.


A good approach is to increase the assistance when you actually need it — such as on hills or into strong headwinds — and reduce it when riding on easier terrain.


3. Hills

Hills require considerably more energy than flat roads.

If your regular journey involves lots of steep climbs, expect your battery consumption to be higher.


This doesn't necessarily mean an electric bike isn't suitable for a hilly area. In fact, tackling hills is one of the biggest reasons many people choose an e-bike in the first place.


It simply means battery capacity and motor performance become particularly important when choosing your bike.


4. Rider and Luggage Weight

The motor has to move the combined weight of the bike, rider and anything you're carrying.


Additional weight therefore requires additional energy.


If you're carrying panniers, shopping, work equipment or other luggage, you may notice slightly reduced range compared with riding the bike unloaded.


The same applies to cargo electric bikes, where the load being carried can have a significant effect on energy consumption.


5. Tyre Pressure

Something as simple as tyre pressure can affect your range.


Underinflated tyres create more rolling resistance, meaning both you and the motor have to work harder to maintain speed.


Keeping your tyres at an appropriate pressure can therefore help improve efficiency while also making the bike feel better to ride.


6. Weather

British weather doesn't always make life easy for an e-bike.


Strong headwinds increase resistance, while colder temperatures can temporarily reduce battery performance.


If you're planning a long winter journey, it's sensible to leave yourself a little more battery capacity than you might during ideal summer conditions.


Can You Still Ride an Electric Bike if the Battery Runs Out?

Yes.


A road-legal electric bike is still fundamentally a bicycle, so if the battery runs out you can continue pedalling.


You simply won't receive assistance from the motor.


Bear in mind that electric bikes are generally heavier than conventional bicycles because of the battery and motor, so riding without assistance can require more effort — particularly on hills.


For longer journeys, keeping an eye on your remaining battery level and adjusting your assistance setting can help prevent this situation.


How Can I Get More Range From My Electric Bike?

You don't necessarily need a bigger battery to increase your range.


Changing the way you ride can make a noticeable difference.


Try to:

  • Use lower assistance levels when possible

  • Change into an appropriate gear rather than relying entirely on the motor

  • Keep your tyres correctly inflated

  • Avoid carrying unnecessary weight

  • Use higher assistance primarily when climbing or accelerating

  • Keep your battery properly charged and maintained

  • Ride smoothly rather than repeatedly accelerating hard


Small improvements in efficiency can add up over a longer journey.


What Battery Size Do I Need?

This depends mainly on what you're going to use your electric bike for.

For relatively short journeys and occasional leisure rides, an enormous battery may not be necessary.


If you're commuting longer distances, regularly tackling hills or planning longer weekend rides, paying extra for a larger-capacity battery can make sense.


It's also worth remembering that the bike with the biggest advertised range isn't automatically the best bike for you.


Comfort, riding position, motor system, weight, gearing, brakes and the type of riding you're planning should all be considered.


Choosing an Electric Bike for Longer Rides

If range is particularly important to you, start by looking at the battery capacity rather than relying solely on the manufacturer's maximum-range figure.


Then think about where you're actually going to ride.


Someone travelling 15 miles each way to work on relatively flat roads has very different requirements from someone riding through steep countryside at weekends.
